The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-September 30, 2017

By David G. Firestone

Austin Dillon #3 Chevy Accessories Chevy SS-Same scheme as #31, same A grade.

Reed Sorenson #15 Ol’ Hick Hickory Pellets Chevy SS-It’s a smooth look with a good color scheme, no complaints here! A

Daniel Suarez #19 Comcast Business Toyota Camry-Same scheme as last year, same D- grade.

Matt Kenseth #20 Sirius/XM Toyota Camry-While it still needs work, it’s much better than the #77! the color scheme is better, as is the design scheme. I’ll give it a B+.

Corey LaJoe #23 Schroth Racing Toyota Camry-It’s an ugly, over designed mess, with a bad color scheme, specifically, the shades of yellow used. It’s hurting my eyes, so I’m going to give it the F it deserves.

Chase Elliott #24 NAPA Brakes Chevy SS-New scheme for 2017, same as NAPA but with BRAKES on sides. A

Matt DiBenedetto #32 Ford Eco-Boost Ford Fusion-Its got a good color scheme, but in terms of design, it is over designed. I don’t like amount of stripes, and the lack of red doesn’t help. It’s still a decent scheme, and it earns a C-.

Gray Gaulding #55 Wind River Toyota Camry-This scheme would work with if the green on the front were used as the scheme OR the fade were used, but the combination of the two looks awkward and forced. It just doesn’t look good, and it earns an F.

Brett Moffitt #83 Super Donut Toyota Camry-Everything I said about the #23 applies here, but the addition of red just makes this worse. F

The Driver Suit Blog-One Of The Kings Of Pro Stock

By David G. Firestone

Minnesota might not seem like it, but they have a decent drag racing pedigree. They have Brainerd International Raceway, and the legendary Brainerd Zoo. Minnesota is also the home to a number of Pro Stock drivers, including Warren Johnson, Kurt Johnson, Jason Line, and Greg Anderson. Between them, they have won a combined total of 273 national events, and 13 Pro Stock Championships.

Greg Anderson’s road to NHRA stardom had some help from a legend. Anderson got his start tuning Warren Johnson’s Pro Stock car for many years, and winning three championships in 1992, 1993, and 1995. The 1995 championship was marred in controversy, with the feud between Warren Johnson and Wayne County Dodge driver Scott Geoffrion taking center stage. This was referred to as a war, and this led to an infamous incident at Houston where the two had a burndown, and a war of words. Later that season, the Wayne County Dodge team shop was broken into, and the engines of the cars were vandalized. Wayne County Dodge was also alleged to have illegally used Nitrous, and the team shut down soon after.

In 1998, Greg Anderson started racing in Pro Stock. He took to the class well, winning 86 races, and four championships. He won 12 races in a single season in 2003. In 2004, he set the record for most #1 Qualifiers in a season with 16. His career almost ended in 2014, after heart surgery. He rebounded, and had a solid showing in 2015, finishing second in the championship standings, as well as finishing second in 2016.

In 2010, he won 5 events, Norwalk, Seattle, Charlotte, Dallas and Las Vegas, and wound up winning the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Championship. One of his crew members was issued this white hat in celebration. The cap is in great condition. It has a Full Throttle Energy Drink logo, as opposed to an NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series logo. The left side features PRO STOCK CHAMPION embroidered into the side with black and yellow accents. The back of the cap has an NHRA logo and CHAMPION embroidered into the Velcro closure strap. The right side has 2010 embroidered into the bill. The top is pristine, and the cap has a white squatchee. The inside of the cap is black, has some light stains, and a Main Gate tag.Greg Anderson’s 2017 season is going well too. He has had solid showings at every event he has raced at, and has two wins, and has a good spot in the point standings. He will be a threat for the championship this year. He is 11 wins away from being the all-time win leader in Pro Stock.

Next week, I will discuss a Ron Capps championship hat.

The Driver Suit Blog-Throwback Thursday-Cory McClenathan-1999

Cory McClenathan took the 1999 US Nationals, his second title, in his MBNA dragster

Our last Top Fuel entry is this Cory Mac edition from 1999. Black and green could work better if the green didn’t closely resemble the black. It just looks too similar, and it doesn’t stand out as much. The white MBNA logos are good, and they work well with the overall scheme. It’s not a terrible scheme, it needs a little tweaking of the green to make it great. I’ll give it a B+. Next week, we start Funny Car.

The Driver Suit Blog-The Camstang…An Odd Racing Mashup

By David G. Firestone.

Editor’s Note: I’ve discussed my opinions on the weekends events on my other page, so I don’t feel that I need to discuss them here.

Racing and improvisation have always gone hand in hand. Race cars have, for generations built by hand, and as a result, builders will improvise new technologies in these cars. Some of these are within the letter of the law, others are not.

Mashups in racing are somewhat less common, but they can be successful. One such example is the Mosler Consulier GTP, which was a mish-mash of auto parts, but was so successful, it was banned by IMSA. One other mashup that had some success more recently was the “Camstang.” “What is a “Camstang?” you may be asking, well, let’s discuss it.

John Force is one of, if not the greatest drag racer of all time. To his name, John Force has16 Funny Car championships, 148 National Event wins, and over 100 different NHRA records, many of which will never be broken in my lifetime. His team has won almost 40% of all Funny Car races in the NHRA. He is one of the best owner-drivers in auto racing.

In 1996, Force made a switch from Pontiac Firebirds to Ford Mustangs. With Ford as a manufacturer, Force would win 13 championships,11 as a a driver, and two as an owner. He was very consistent, and knew he could count on Ford. Ford had more success in the NHRA than they did in NASCAR, yet in 2013, Ford made the announcement that after 2014, they would pull out of the NHRA. John was understandably upset, but he decided to press on. John didn’t seem to be concerned about time, and took his time working out a deal with a new manufacturer. His patience paid off, and after the 2014 season, announced that he had signed a deal with Chevrolet.

This lack of concern for time almost instantly came back to bite him. After signing the deal, he quickly realized that it would take a full year for Chevy to design a Funny Car body for the team. The deal was announced in January, with the season starting in the first week of February. This work was impossible to do in time, so John Force was in trouble, and he knew it. He couldn’t use Mustang bodies as he had a deal with Chevy. Chevy couldn’t build a new body in time, so what to do?

John’s solution would prove to be controversial, but effective. Somebody came up with the idea to take the old Mustang body, cut the nose off, and replace it with a Chevy Camaro nose, and re-decal the back to a Camaro design. Force asked both Ford and Chevy, who gave their blessing, and the NHRA approved it.

The new bodies were dubbed “Camstang” bodies, a portmanteau of Camaro and Mustang for these bodies, while fans of opposing teams stated that they felt that John Force had gotten special treatment. However, everything Force did was within the letter of the rules, and approved by all involved. John Force and Robert Hight had two wins each, and Courtney Force had some success, but didn’t win an event in 2015. By 2016, the new Camaro bodies had debuted, and the old ones were kept as backups, and eventually turned into show cars. The Camstang will forever remain as one of the best mashups in recent auto racing, and I can hope that lessons learned will help prevent this error in judgment from happening again.

Some Thoughts On Anthem Protesting

By David G. Firestone

One of the big issues in American sports is the national anthem. Many NFL and NBA players have made the bold decision to not stand during the National Anthem because of the recent police-involved shootings of unarmed African-Americans. In the words one one player: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder”

This issue seemed to be dying down in recent weeks, until The President made an inflammatory speech concerning the matter, which reignited the issue, and kicked the protests into high gear. This last week, so many players were protesting his remarks, that it has become a major news story. Since then, a number of NASCAR teams have stated that there is no tolerance for disrespecting the flag during the national anthem. I’ll get to that part in a little bit, but I need to discuss why a lot of people are upset about these protests.

There is a major disconnect between those who support the protests, and those who think the players are acting selfishly, or those who are offended by their actions. I’m going to state one of the more reasonable arguments against them. I’m doing this because I’m of the belief that you should learn the reasons why people who disagree with you believe what they believe. When you do that, you grow as a person, and you may learn something about yourself.

I’m not going to waste my time on white racists, since they don’t deserve my time. Instead, I’m going to focus on military members, veterans, and their families. I’ve always supported the troops. I have the utmost respect for those who have served in the Armed Forces. My grandfather was one of the men who stormed the beaches of Normandy during D-Day. I’ve also, like a lot of educated people, realized that you can support the troops themselves without always supporting what they are fighting for.

In the minds of a lot of active duty military members, veterans, and families of deceased military members, the players’ actions are not so much an attempt to make America better, but his actions are disrespecting a country that means more to them than anyone else. For those who served in Germany and Japan, for those who served in Vietnam, for those who served in Iraq, and Afghanistan, Their actions across as a slap in the face. For those who have lost friends, comrades, and family members, their action come across as selfish.

I can’t, in all sincerity, dismiss the opinions of someone who fought for our country. I can’t dismiss the opinions of a parent who has had to bury their child, a soldier who died fighting for a country that, flawed as it is, that solider believed in. I can’t dismiss the opinion of a solider who has lost friends and comrades in battle. To them, the players’ actions are opening up wounds, and bringing back pain.

Now I need to discuss why NASCAR teams are saying what they are about these protests. Like it or not, NASCAR’s fan base is overwhelmingly conservative. Not all fans are, but a lot of fans are. They are also highly patriotic. They are proud to be American, and they don’t care who knows it. As such, most of NASCAR’s fan base will overwhelmingly react negatively if there are anthem protests. Fans drive the sport in NASCAR, so this is not a minor issue. Above and beyond that, NASCAR is non union, so drivers and teams have little protection. If a driver or crew member were to protest, said driver or crew member could and would be fired on the spot. This has been used to keep drivers in line, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is used to prevent protests.

I’m not going to force my opinions on what the right answer is. I just wanted to give perspective to help people pop the bubbles of ignorance they live in, on one side or the other. These are real reasons, and things to think about.
