The Driver Suit Blog-Throwback Thursday-Davey Allison-1991

By David G. Firestone

Davey Allison’s Texaco Havoline Ford Thunderbird speeds down the track in 1991.

The white-outlined gold numbers are gone, as is the metallic gold stripe. They have been replaced with a new design red number, and yellow letters, respectively. I like the new rounder numbers, and the shade of red works well on the black background. The Havoline logo looks so much better in yellow than in metallic gold. The car has a very smooth look, and it looks really good. This is the scheme that Texaco would use for the rest of their time in NASCAR.

The Driver Suit Blog-My Thoughts On Vacation

By David G. Firestone

Just a short article this week. I love writing The Driver Suit Blog, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I need a break. As such, starting this Saturday, I’m going to take my annual summer sabbatical. I need a chance to decompress and get away from the hectic pace that is writing The Driver Suit Blog for a while, and summer in Chicago is the best time to do it.

I will have Monday Videos, Throwback Thursdays, and Friday Features ready to go, but I’m not updating the Paint Scheme Tracker, and Grades, nor will I do My Thoughts On. I will do my annual Route 66 Nationals article. Route 66 will be the 800th Funny Car race in NHRA history. I plan on doing my usual thing, and having a great time. I’m not just going to be sitting idle for July, I have a number of things planned and ready to go. I don’t know for sure if I’m going to post a recap, but I might. I haven’t decided as of this writing.

Can someone explain to me why the week before vacation is the longest week of the year? I get the time goes slow when you are waiting for something fun to happen, but the slow week really sucks. My shifts at work are going to seem longer, and the week in general is going to seem longer. But the end result is worth the wait. See you in August!

The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-June 25, 2016

By David G. Firestone

Kevin Harvick #4 Mobil 1 Chevy SS-Same scheme as Mobil 1 #14, Same A grade.

Greg Biffle #16 Kleen Performance Plus Motor Oil Ford Fusion-Good color scheme, black looks good, and the silver, yellow, and white works well. The design is mediocre at best. The “cutting edge” design is over and done, and just looks blah. It averages out to a B- .

Ryan Newman #31 Grainger Chevy SS-White works a lot better than green for the Grainger scheme. This scheme just looks better, and it earns an A+ as a result.

Brian Scott #44 Albertsons’/Blu Emu Ford Fusion-Same scheme as Albertson’s, same A grade.

AJ Allmendinger #47 Kroger/Crisco/Hungry Jack Chevy SS-Same scheme as Kroger, same A grade.

AJ Allmendinger #47 Ralph’s/Kingsford Chevy SS-Same scheme as Kroger, same A grade.

Cole Whitt #55 Vydrox Plus Chevy SS-Same scheme as #98 Vydrox Plus, same A grade.

Cody Ware #55 Carport Empire Chevy SS-The design could be seen as a tad overdone, but it’s not tht much, and the color scheme is great, so I give it an A.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 Axalta/University of Michigan Chevy SS-Michigan has a really good color scheme, and a really unique helmet design, and they translate very well to Dale’s car. This scheme works well, and deserves an A+.

Dylan Lupton #93 Bell Brothers/Elk Grove Toyota Toyota Camry-The color scheme as a whole is decent, but the design looks like they took the ugly door design, and expanded it to the entire car. It just looks bad. C-

The Driver Suit Blog-The Vest Project Part 8-Brazillian Flair

32-durolineBy David G. Firestone

The Vest Project rolls on with this week’s installment. You often see sponsors who are loyal to drivers, but here is a case where the loyalty is deeper that you might think. Duroline is a maker of brake parts from Brazil. In recent years, they had been in NASCAR, with fellow Brazilian Miguel Paludo. The two groups came together in NASCAR in a big way.

Hailing from Nova Prata, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Miguel Paludo is a former Porsche GT3 Cup Brasil champion, having won back to back championships in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, he went to The US to compete in stock car racing, starting in ARCA, then moving to the K&N Pro Series East. In 2011, he joined Red Horse Racing for the season, and was sponsored by Duroline.

In 2012, he moved to Turner Motorsports, and Duroline Brakes & Components followed him to Turner. He ran the full season for Turner, and also ran two Xfinity Series races to boot. He didn’t have a great season. He scored a top 5, 5 top 10’s, a pole at Daytona, and led 67 races. During that season, one of his crew members wore this Simpson MTO 23 vest.32-durolineThe vest does show use, although it is in very good condition. It appears to be made out of an older version of Nomex, similar to what was used in the 1990’s.

The collar is red, and is not a Velcro closure.32-duroline-collarThe only tag in the cowl is an MTO23 tag, with an XL flag tag.32-duroline-tag1The right chest has a CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES logo, and a MIGUEL PALUDO logo embroidered into it.32-duroline-rchestThe left chest features a TURNER MOTORSPORTS and a Chevy bowtie logo embroidered into it.32-duroline-lchestThe front torso features a large DUROLINE logo, which, for some reason, has the name twice, as BRAKES AND COMPONENTS embroidered below it.32-duroline-flogoThe warranty and identification labels are present in the zipper behind the large Duroline logo. There is a name written on the tag, but it is hard to read.32-duroline-tag2 32-duroline-tag3The bottom hem doesn’t have straps that can be tightened.32-duroline-rhem 32-duroline-lhemThe shoulders have red epaulets with GOODYEAR logos as well as SIMPSON logos. The standard vest sleeves are present as well.32-duroline-rshoulder 32-duroline-rsleeve 32-duroline-lshoulder 32-duroline-lsleeve1The back of the vest has some light wear present.32-durolinebThe back of the collar has the SFI 3-2A/5 certification present.32-duroline-neckThe back torso has the identical logo as the front, and, as with most driver suits, is much higher than the front.32-duroline-blogo32-duroline-blogoPaludo was one of Turner’s many drivers in both the Xfinity Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. I’ve got one more Turner vest we are going to cover, and we are going to cover it next week’s version of The Vest Project.  Also, starting next week, I’m taking my annual summer break.  I will have videos, Throwback Thursdays, and Friday Features ready to go, but I won’t do My Thoughts On, Paint Scheme Tracker and Grades.  I plan on going to the Route 66 Nationals, and will do a column about it.  See you in August!

The Driver Suit Blog-Thrownback Thursday-Dave Marcus-1991

By David G. Firestone

Dave Marcus is paying tribute to the United States Coast Guard in his 1991 Chevy Lumina.

The aqua works well with the sponsor, and the red and white stripes look good too. The door numbers look better on the door than on the roof for some reason. The black border doesn’t look good on the numbers. I do like the “We Support the Troops” motif on the back bumper. I also like the fact that the rear logo doesn’t really get cut off by the wheel well. I also like the Dave Marcus signature on the name rail.
