The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-November 28, 2015

By David G. Firestone

Kyle Larson #42 Target Plain Chevy SS-I really hope the plaid thing is done with, because these cars are brutal to look at. D-

Ryan Preece #98 Mowhawk/East West Marine Chevy SS-The sponsorship destroys an otherwise solid scheme, taking it from an A to a B+.

With that, my winter sabbatical begins. I will occasionally update the tracker and grades, but for the most part, I’m going to decompress, and enjoy the holiday season. The paint scheme leaderboard will go ahead as planned. I want to thank you for another successful year, and see you in 2016!

The Driver Suit Blog-2015 Driver Suit Blog Gift Guide

By David G. Firestone

It seems everyone is doing gift guides for the Holiday season. So, in honor of Black Friday, I figured I would get in on the action. We all have a racing fan we know, whether it be a coworker, friend, family member, neighbor, or whoever, and you might not know what to get them for the holidays. Racing fans are not that difficult to shop for as one might think, so here is a list of things ideal to give the racing fan in your life.

Racing tickets-The ideal gift for any racing fan is a ticket to see the race live in person. Plus, if said person lives with you, it gets them out of the house for a day, which is nice.

Anything, and I mean ANYTHING with their favorite driver’s name and/or number on it.-Let’s be honest, racing fans want anything that is branded with their favorite driver. I’m fully convinced that male fans will buy a dildo, if it has their driver’s number on it. Just make sure you get the right driver. You don’t want to give a Joey Logano fan a Matt Kenseth branded item…or vise versa. Also, WHY DOES NASCAR SELL ROMANTIC NOVELS?

A big screen tv-To watch racing on…obviously! Turn racing on, and the fans will watch, and you can go about your life without them.

Food delivery gift cards-Racing fans do not like leaving the house to get food, so give them the ability to eat without leaving the house.

Beer-Can’t watch racing without beer. Most racing fans aren’t sophisticated so when it comes to beer…the cheaper the better! Make sure they choose a designated driver first.

Bacon-Now if I really have to explain why this is a good gift, you probably should be reading Cosmo instead of this…

Red meat-See above.

BBQ Sauce-Goes on the red meat.

Potato chips or other snacks-To be eaten with pizza, bacon or red meat.

Soda-Used with beer to help wash down the pizza, bacon, or red meat

Maalox, Pepto Bismol, or any other antacid-A racing fan after pigging out on pizza, bacon, or red meat while watching a race is not pleasant to watch. Said fan is even worse to deal with after the fact, so this should help.

Air freshener-See above.

Follow this easy guide, and the racing fan in your life will be happy!

The Driver Suit Blog-The 3rd Annual Paint Scheme Awards!

CIMG1130

By David G. Firestone

For the end of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Season, the Paint Schemies have returned! The Schemies will reveal the best, and worst paint schemes of 2015. I’ve eliminated the exhibition and improved categories for 2015, with exhibition replaced by throwback paint scheme. This was done using the Driver Suit Blog executive committee for paint scheme analysis and consists of me and Driver Suit Blog assistant, my cat Alejandro, and uses the following standards:

Color Scheme:How the colors look, and how they work with each other.

Overall Design:How good the design itself looks, is there too much, or not enough.

Primary Sponsor Logos: How the primary sponsor logos look on the car

Originality: How original is the scheme.

All of the above can work for or against a scheme, and all will be taken into consideration.

Let’s get the bad paint scheme awards out of the way.

FURNITURE ROW RACING #78 CHEVY SS

Now for my annual top 10 list, this year, we are looking at the 10 worst paint schemes of all time…

10. Tony Stewart 2011 #14 El Monterey/Office Depot Chevy Impala-Dark red, Petty blue, and gold do not work as a color scheme.

9.Jimmie Johnson 2013 #48 Yellow Lowe’s Chevy SS-As awful as this scheme is, at least he didn’t wear a yellow uniform, or he would look like a peep, though I do like the chrome helmet.

8. AJ Allmendinger 2003 #51 Neil Bonnett Tribute Chevy SS-This scheme worked in 1994, and really should have stayed there. Also, you couldn’t have used throwback door numbers?

7. Marty Robbins 1978 #42 Marty Robbins Dodge-As deomnstrated above, pink and yellow is NOT a good color scheme.

6. Any paint scheme run by Travis Pastrana in NASCAR-This is just a representation, but anything Travis Pastrana has driven in NASCAR is awful.

5. Brian Keselowsk 2014 #52 Support Millitary Toyota Camry-There is a reason this scheme won the Worst Single Scheme Schemie for two years in a row.

4. Jeff Green 2003 #43 Yu-Gi-Oh Cheerios Dodge Avenger-”Hey! NASCAR fans really like Yu-Gi-Oh, so we should advertise to them” said no one ever.

3. Various Teams 2007 57 Chevy Monte Carlo-To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1957 Chevy, one of the most beautiful cars ever made, Chevy convinced NASCAR to run one of the ugliest paint schemes ever run.

2. Kenny Irwin 1997 #27 Tonka/Winner’s Circle Ford Thunderbird-I really think, given the sponsor, a 9 year old helped design this car.

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2000 #3 Peter Max Chevy Monte Carlo-I was a die hard Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan since watching my first race, the 1990 Twin 125’s. I loved that black #3 with the silver stripe on the bottom. For what would be his last race, Dale raced this car, which looks like a clown threw up all over it. I have yet to find a Dale Sr. fan who will defend this scheme. At least he didn’t wear a matching driver suit.

The Driver Suit Blog-My Thoughts On Toyota’s 2015 Racing Season

By David G. Firestone

Last year, I wrote a My Thoughts On where I ripped Toyota for their lackluster performance in NASCAR. Well, what a difference a year makes. While 2014 was a year Toyota would rather forget in NASCAR, 2015 is a year they will treasure. Kyle Busch and Erik Jones won championships in The Sprint Cup and Camping World Trucks respectively. Add their NHRA accomplishments to the mix, and Toyota has become a true competitor in the big leagues of American auto racing.

Let’s look at Toyota’s 2014 stats, starting with the Sprint Cup. I’m going to add the Sprint Unlimited, Budweiser Duels and All-Star Races into the mix as part of my point. Speedweeks started quite well for Toyota, with Denny Hamlin winning the Sprint Unlimited, and his Duel race, with Matt Kenseth winning his Duel race. Toyota had a good showing in the Daytona 500, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race itself. After that, it seemed with the driver lineup they had, Toyota would have a strong season, after winning three of the four events at Speedweeks. With Kyle Busch winning the Auto Club 500 in March, and Denny Hamlin winning the Aaron’s 499 in May, it would seem that Toyota would have a decent season.

Sadly, Toyota didn’t win another points race for the rest of the season. Clint Bowyer would with the Sprint Showdown, but Toyota would not find victory lane for the rest of the season. In total, Toyota won 6 of 40 events in 2014, their Chase grid had only 3 drivers, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth, who raced in through points. Somehow Denny Hamlin was still alive at Homestead, but was a non-factor, finishing 7th.

They fared a little better, in the Xfinity Series, with 8 wins in 33 races. Toyota was even more of a non-factor in the championship. The Truck Series is their shining star, with 18 wins in 22 races, and Matt Crafton winning the championship. The Truck Series success is impressive, but their lackluster performances in the top two NASCAR National Series is nothing to celebrate.

Looking at their NHRA stats for 2014, it’s actually impressive. Toyota teams were very impressive in Top Fuel, winning 16 of 24 events. But because JR Todd couldn’t step up, Tony Schumacher would win the championship. Funny Car was even worse, with Toyota winning 5 races, and the three Countdown drivers, Alexis DeJoria, Del Worsham, and Cruz Pedregon didn’t even crack the top 5 in points.

That was not a memorable year for Toyota, but one year later…

In the Sprint Cup Series, Toyota won 17 of 40 events, counting the Unlimited, Duels, All-Star Showdown, and All-Star Race. They also won The Coca Cola 600, The Brickyard 400, and the Ford Eco-Boost 400, which was won by Kyle Busch, which won him the championship. The Xfinity Series was a mixed bag. While Toyota won 11 of the 33 races, they were a non-factor in the championship. The Truck Series was theirs to shine, winning 14 of 23 races, and Erik Jones winning the championship.

2015 was a great year in the NHRA. Toyota continued their winning ways in the NHRA, winning 17 of 24 events. Antron Brown, devoted Toyota driver, stepped up in the Countdown, and won the Top Fuel championship. Funny Car was a great year as well. Toyota only won 4 races in 2015 in Funny Car, BUT all four of those races were won by Del Worsham, and all four were in the Countdown. His race against Jack Beckman was the best in this respect because that race eliminated Beckman from championship contention and secured Toyota’s fourth championship in 5 series in 2015.

Long story short, a year really does make a difference. I slammed Toyota last year, because their performance was lackluster at best. This year, I can’t say anything bad about Toyota’s racing program, and I look forward to 2016.

The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-November 21, 2015

Kasey Kahne #5 Great Clips Tribute Chevy SS-It’s amazing how changing the door number makes this scheme look much better. The yellow door number works with this scheme and it looks better, and earns a C+

Sam Hornish Jr. #9 Go Bowling/Gigablast Ford Fusion-Same as Medallion Bank, same B+ grade.

Sam Hornish Jr. #9 Cheney Brothers Ford Fusion-The curve around the door number is unnessicary, and it looks awful. Adding part of the paint scheme around it makes it look even worse. I can’t give this scheme a passing grade if my life depended on it. F

Greg Biffle #16 Bleacher Report Ford Fusion-It’s a solid design, though the color scheme could use some work. Still, it’s work a B+.

JJ Yeley #26 Overture Toyota Camry-Same as #23 Overture, same F grade.

Brett Moffitt #34 Fr8 Auctions Ford Fusion-The color scheme is great, can’t find fault with it, and the design is great as well, I like the flames. All in all, I give it an A+.

Cole Whitt #35 Speed Stick Ford Fusion-The color scheme works well with the design, which is simple and smooth. I like this scheme. A+

Cole Whitt #35 Ferguson Enterprises Ford Fusion-Simple design with a great color scheme will always earn an A+.

Landon Cassill #40 Interstate Moving/Precon Chevy SS-Get rid of those spikes at the bottom, and this would be a solid A scheme, but those ugly spikes take it down to a B+.

Jimmie Johnson #48 Lowe’s Tribute Chevy SS-It’s amazing how changing the door number makes this scheme look much better. The yellow door number works with this scheme and it looks better, and earns a B-

Brendan Gaughn #62 Prairie Auto Credit Chevy SS-Nothing wrong with this scheme! A+

Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 Nationwide Tribute Chevy SS-If this was Diet Mountain Dew, the yellow numbers would work quite well, but with Nationwide, it clashes, and takes it down to a C+.

The Driver Suit Blog-NASCAR Napkin RIngs Part 2

interstatering-1 - CopyBy David G. Firestone

I’ve talked about NASCAR banquet rings before. They just fascinate me. I’ve understood the significance of championship rings, who doesn’t. But I’ve never seen these kinds of rings before, where they were enlarged, and used at the banquet as napkin rings until I came across these NASCAR example. With the exception of a Jeff Burton example, they are all Joe Gibbs #18. I’ve come to learn recently, that Interstate Batteries was the group behind these. We’ll get to that in a minute.

At the end of every season, there are banquets, one for all the drivers and teams, as well as ones for individual teams hosted by sponsors or teams. At Joe Gibbs Racing, these napkin rings were given out to crew members and their families as a thank you. Every ring represents a race win. I’ve covered the Daytona 500, jarretring2-1 jarretring2-5 jarretring2-4 jarretring2-3 jarretring2-2Mello Yello 400, jarretring4-1 jarretring4-5 jarretring4-4 jarretring4-3 jarretring4-2and Coca Cola 600 labontering2-1 labontering2-2 labontering2-3 labontering2-4 labontering2-5 rings before, but I have a couple of copies of these rings, so I will move on.

I also have an example from the 1995 Miller Genuine Draft 500, which took place at Michigan International Speedway, which Labonte won. That took place on June 18, 1995. On August 20, 1995, Labonte returned to Michigan and won the GM Goodwrench Dealer 400 that same year. This ring, same design as the other two rings that season, but with green around the front 18 instead of red.labontering5-1 labontering5-2 labontering5-3 labontering5-4 labontering5-5

In 1997, Texas Motor Speedway hosted their first race, the Interstate Batteries 500. The event saw Dale Jarrett on the pole and Jeff Burton winning the race. This proves my theory that Interstate Batteries was behind the rings. This pewter ring was prepared for the race. I haven’t been able to figure out if this is was used at a banquet, or was sold in the gift shop. But it’s nearly identical design and style is hard to ignore. Since Interstate Batteries was doing this for Joe Gibbs racing before this race, and then this ring was made for that race, there is no doubt in my mind that Interstate Batteries was the driving force behind that.interstatering-1 interstatering-2 interstatering-4 interstatering-5

Above and beyond that, it makes sense that Jeff Burton’s team would do that, since at that time, they were sponsored by Exide Batteries, a competitor to Interstate. Exide had to have found out what Interstate was doing, and once Jeff Burton began winning races, Exide decided to join in the fun. It would also explain why there don’t seem to be any examples of any other teams making these rings besides Joe Gibbs Racing, and Roush Racing.

Ok, now with that out of the way, let’s stay in 1997, and look at a new design that Bobby Labonte’s team was given. The 1997 Napa 500 at Atlanta was the season finale. Jeff Gordon won the championship over Dale Jarrett by 14 points. Bobby Labonte won the race. It’s the same design as the other rings, except it is made of pewter. The material change is very evident in that it shows scratches and more chips than their brass counterparts.labontering4-1 labontering4-2 labontering4-3 labontering4-4 labontering4-5

Pewter didn’t last too long, and they switched back to brass by 1999. By 1999, the rings were redesigned as well. The driver profile hasn’t changed, but on the other side, a new logo design takes over the car logo. The crest of the ring has a bigger #18 and a glaze around it, instead of a cheap enamel.labontering6-1 labontering6-2 labontering6-3 labontering6-4 labontering6-5

The silver color returned in 2000, which culminated in Bobby Labonte winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship over Dale Earnhardt. One of the four races he won was the 2000 Dura Lube / Kmart 400 at Rockingham. This brand new design was prepared. A new #18 panel was designed, with the sponsor panel unchanged. The crest has been redesigned with car color on the stone area, and bigger lettering on the front.labontering7-1 labontering7-2 labontering7-3 labontering7-4 labontering7-5

Next week, It’s that time of ye delve into the Paint Schemies…See you then.

The Driver Suit Blog-The Two Most Iconic Logos in Auto Racing Part 2

stpBy David G. Firestone

If you were into grunge in the 1990’s, the name Stone Temple Pilots is very familiar to you. Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, Eric Kretz, Scott Weiland met in San Diego and in 1986, began using the name Mighty Joe Young, after a 1949 movie. When informed that Mighty Joe Young had been claimed by Chicago Blues singer Joseph Young, the band needed a new name. As children of the 1970’s, they had seen STP stickers on motorcycles, and other various places, so they took that abbreviation and started calling themselves the Stone Temple Pilots.

Indeed those stickers were iconic, but I doubt if The DeLeos, Kretz and Weiland understood the meaning behind that STP logo they liked so much. Indeed, many people know the logo, but many don’t know the meaning behind it. STP stands for Scientifically Treated Petroleum. It was invented in 1953 by three businessmen, who started selling it out of the trunk of their car. It was so effective, that auto racing teams came calling for it. STP grew from there, not only designing products to help drivers, both in racing and on the road, but sponsoring teams in racing.

The STP logo was part of the first can design, and has remained unchanged. That logo, which was seen on the sides of race cars, was turned into decals. Those decals sold in droves. The red oval with blue and white STP on it, with THE RACER’S EDGE simply looked cool, and the decals turned up on cars, motorcycles, locker doors, and dozens of other places. Many people bought the decal, some, I’m convinced, didn’t know anything about the product.

While many drivers ran the STP red oval, it’s become attached to one particular car. It was a partnership that transcended the barriers of time, and is just as iconic as the logo. It began at rhe 1971 Winston Golden State 400 at Riverside, on June 20, 1971, when STP started sponsoring the #43 car of Richard Petty. Driving a blue 1971 Plymouth Road Runner, Petty started second, but due to engine issues only ran 110 of the 153 laps, finishing 13th. Though it seemed insignificant at the time, this would be the beginning of a long partnership between Petty and STP, which would result in 4 Sprint Cup Championships and 60 of Petty’s 200 victories.

With STP, the brand identity is more important than the brand itself, it seems. Many different racing equipment and additive companies are in business today, some longer than STP, but very few still use their original logo, and fewer still have had that logo prove so, not only iconic, but influential as well. The STP logo will NEVER change, and it shouldn’t change.
