The late Tim Richmond in his 1986 Folger’s Chevy Monte Carlo is up this week.

Red, gold, and white is a great color scheme. The gold reflective door numbers look really good. I wish the stripe would extend all the way around the car, except on just the front and rear. Other than that, this is a really good look.

I’m also amazed at the angle of the spoiler. This was the first year the Monte Carlo had the aerocoupe rear-window design. Previously, the rear-window had been vertical, but because the Ford Thunderbird had the angled rear-window, it was much more aerodynamic. The low angle of the spoiler is meant to work around that.

Eddie Bierschwale in his 1986 Kodak Pontiac Grand Prix is our feature for this week’s installment of Throwback Thursday.

I really miss Kodak in NASCAR, I really do. They had one of my favorite shades of yellow that has ever graced the side of a race car. The shade of red they used contrasts quite well with the yellow, and works well. The outline on the door numbers is a bit unnessciary, but I can live with it. I like what they did with the hood and roof, giving it a camera film motif. I also like the yellow bordered red numbers on the roof as well.

As much as I like the paint scheme, the 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix is horrible looking. The bubble rear windshield, and the bumper on the front end look awful, and take away from a decent look. I will say that I like the color-coordinated window net. I think that should make a comeback.

Former Sprint Cup Series champion Alan Kulwicki in his Quincy’s Steak House Ford Thunderbird from 1985 is our feature this week.

Quincy’s Steak House is the feature on the car, with a huge black logo on the yellow hood. The yellow extends to the middle of the C-post, where black takes over, and a large Quincy’s logo, slightly off-center, is the prominent feature. The color scheme is good, and the design scheme is decent, but the door number look odd. They look overdone, with the needless addition of red. Plain black, even with the outline would have worked very well.

I’ve also noticed a couple of things with the Ford Thunderbird in 1986. The grille is much more plain than in 1985, and the headlights have been covered, giving the car a smoother look, and more aerodynamic feel. Also note the small triangle which tells the crew members where to put the jack, something that wasn’t present on the other schemes I’ve done.

Our classic scheme for the week is this Kenny Schrader scheme from 1985

This is a really good shade of blue. The white lettering looks good on the sides. The Ultra Seal logo is placed quite well, with none of the logo lost to the curves of the car. The front has an interesting red and white design, over the Ford Thunderbird grille and headlights. It looks like it would extend to the back of the car, but it doesn’t. It’s an odd quirk, but it doesn’t look bad at all.

The diagonal logo on the hood is a tad hard to make out, but it is a unique look that isn’t used anymore. The window net also looks so flimsy compared to modern window nest. I’m also wondering how much extra weight the grille and headlights add to the overall weight of the car. The large door numbers look good, much better than the smaller ones used today.

This is a Buddy Arrington example from 1985

This scheme was only used for the 1985 Pepsi Firecracker 400 on July 4, and interestingly, despite obviously being a Ford, is sponsored by Jim Peacock Dodge. The patriotic red, white, and blue scheme works very well. The vintage blue and white numbers stand out on the red background, and the vintage lettering looks really good. The design is great too, with the red on the side running under the windows, and the blue over the windows.

The vintage wheels look good in the blue paint, the white letter tires work well on them, and I’m amazed at how high off the ground the car is. This is a really good look.
