The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-January 28, 2017

By David G. Firestone

Kevin Harvick #4 Busch Light Ford Fusion-Same basic scheme as Busch, same A grade.

Trevor Bayne #6 Advocare Ford Fusion-The white looks good, and the multi-colored checks look decent as well. All in all, I give it an A.

Denny Hamlin #11 FedEx Toyota Camry-The lighter blue as a background is decent, but the paintbrush design doesn’t work as well. It’s not horrible, but it’s not great. I’ll give it a B-.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #17 Fastenal Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Kyle Busch #18 M&M’s Toyota Camry-Same basic scheme as last year, same A grade.

Daniel Suarez #19 Stanley Toyota Camry-Same basic scheme as last year, same B+ grade.

Matt Kenseth #20 DeWalt/Flexwolt Toyota CamryThe stripes up the sides and hood works very well. It’s bold, but not overdone. Add in a good color scheme, and you have an A scheme.

Joey Logano #22 AAA of Southern California Ford Fusion–Same basic scheme as last year, same D grade.

Paul Menard #27 Menard’s/Peak Chevy SS-While colors can affect how a template looks, the Peak blue works well here, and the scheme looks good. A

Landon Cassill #34 Love’s Truck Stops Ford Fusion-Same basic scheme as last year, same A grade.

Kyle Larson #42 Credit One Chevy SS-Same basic scheme as last year, same F grade.

AJ Allmendinger #47 Kroger/Stouffers/Cheez It’s Chevy SS-The curved stripes around the door number are a definite downgrade from last year. They are ugly, and overdone. Still the car as a whole is decent, and the scheme gets a B+.

Martin Truex Jr. #78 Auto Owner’s Insurance Toyota Camry-Same basic scheme as last year, same A grade.

Michael McDowell #95 K-LOVE Chevy SS-The shorter stripes work very well, and the car as a whole has a great look. Add in a good color scheme, and you have an A scheme.

DJ Kennington #96 Lordco Toyota Camry-The color scheme could work, or the design scheme could work. The color and design schems together don’t work that well. Change one or the other, and the scheme might be higher than a C-.

The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-January 7, 2017

By David G. Firestone

Jamie McMurray #1 GearWrench Chevy SS-The black background works very well, and the stripes work very well too. Add in a great color scheme, and you have an A scheme.

Brad Keselowski #2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Brad Keselowski #2 Alliance Truck Parts Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Brad Keselowski #2 Wurth Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Brad Keselowski #2 Auto Trader Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D- grade.

Austin Dillon #3 Dow Chevy SS-Overall, it’s a great scheme, with a great design. My one complaint is those designs in the red just in front of the door number. They are ugly, and they take an A scheme down to an A-.

Austin Dillon #3 AAA Chevy SS-It’s an over designed, ugly mess of a car. There are too many designs, and not enough thought put into the design. The color scheme is the only good thing, and earns a D+.

Austin Dillon #3 American Ethanol Chevy SS-The side stripes being removed gives the car a great look. The color scheme is good too. It earns an A.

Kevin Harvick #4 Busch Ford Fusion-The blue scheme works well, and I like the detail in the mountains. Its a great looking scheme, and I give it an A.

Kevin Harvick #4 Jimmy John’s Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Kasey Kahne #5 Farmers Insurance Chevy SS-Same scheme as last year, same D+ grade.

Kasey Kahne #5 Liftmaster Chevy SS-It’s a much cleaner scheme. It’s a much simpler scheme. It’s an A scheme.

Kasey Kahne #5 Great Clips Chevy SS-Same scheme as last year, same D+ grade.

Joey Logano #22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D grade.

Joey Logano #22 AAA Ford FusionSame scheme as last year, same D grade.

Joey Logano #22 Auto Trader Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D- grade.

Chase Elliott #24 NAPA Auto Parts Chevy SS-I like the yellow accents added to the sides, roof, and front fender. The car still has a great look, and it earns an A.

Chase Elliott #24 Kelly Blue Book Chevy SS-It’s a much simpler design, and it has a great color scheme. An upgrade from last year that earns an A.

Paul Menard #27 Menard’s/Richmond Chevy SS-The new Menard’s template works well…if this is a template. The front can work, and the lack of side stripes works well too. It earns an A.

Ryan Newman #31 CAT Chevy SS-I love the hood and roof design, but I don’t like the side design between the wheel wells. It doesn’t match, and just look awkward. Still, even taking this in to consideration, it’s still a B- scheme.

Aric Almirola #43 Smithfield Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same B+ grade.

Aric Almiroa #43 U.S. Air Force Ford Fusion-What’s cooler than lightning…more lightning! That’s what this new scheme has. It looks great, and it’s still an A scheme.

Kurt Busch #41 Monster Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D grade.

Kurt Busch #41 Haas Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D grade.

Erik Jones #77 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry-I get what they were trying to do, but the scheme as a whole just doesn’t look good. The lightning stripes look bad. It just doesn’t work. The color scheme works well though, so I’ll give the scheme is a C-.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 Nationwide Chevy SS-The loss of silver works with this scheme. The design works well, and I like the stripes up the sides. I give it an A.

By David G. Firestone

Austin Dillon #3 Dow/Owens Corning Chevy SS-Same scheme as Dow Olympics, same B- grade.

Casey Mears #13 Geico Millitary Chevy SS-Same scheme as Geico Military but with green letters, same F grade.

Tony Stewart #14 Mobil 1/Always A Racer Chevy SS-The horizontal black to gray fade is a really good look, and the Always a Racer look is really good. A

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #17 Roush Performance Ford Fusion-Same scheme as #16 Roush Performance, same A grade.

Joey Logano #22 Shell/Pennzoil/Auto Trader Ford Fusion-Same basic scheme as Shell/Pennzoil, same D grade.

Ryan Newman #31 CAT Minestar Chevy SS-Blue and yellow is a good combination for a race car, and the simple stripes work very well. It’s a good look, and earns an A.

Kyle Larson #42 Target/Crest Chevy SS-Same scheme as Target, same A grade.

Brian Scott #44 Safeway Ford Fusion-Same scheme as Safeway, same A grade.

Matt DiBenedetto #49 NASCAR Heat Evolution Toyota Camry-Orange and black can be hit or miss, and this is a miss. The car doesn’t look good regardless of the color scheme, it’s over designed, and it looks terrible. It gets the F it deserves.

DJ Kennington #55 NPP Chevy SS-The shade of red is good, and I like the design. A

Ty Dillon #95 Advil Chevy SS-Blue, yellow, and white can work as a color scheme, it just doesn’t work here. Add in a design scheme that looks bad, and you have a D+ scheme.

The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-June 4, 2016

By David G. Firestone

Austin Dillon #3 Dow/StemAmbasadors Chevy SS-Same scheme as Dow, same B+ grade.

Danica Patrick #10 Nature’s Bakery/Fox Sports Go Chevy SS-New scheme for 2016, same as Nature’s Bakery, but with Fox Sports Go on quarter panels. A+

Joey Logano #22 Shell Throwback Chevy SS-I didn’t really like this scheme the first time around, and the lack of accuracy in terms of the Pennzoil logos takes it from a B+ down to a B-

David Ragan #23 Weaver Media Toyota Camry– While I do like the color scheme and paper motif, I think they overdid the paper motif. I’m willing to give it a B+, since it is a decent scheme.

Ryan Newman #31 Kalahari Resorts Chevy SS-The color scheme is good, but the design scheme is horrid. The background color is good, but the stripes up the sides are awful, and the needless addition of red on the stripes doesn’t do the scheme a lot of favors. The good and the bad average out to give this scheme a C-.

Jeb Burton #32 Rocky Ridge Custom Trucks Ford Fusion-Not the best scheme I’ve seen, but the new mountain design is a much needed improvement on the old design. I give it a B+

Jeffery Earnhardt #32 Can Am Ford Fusion-This is a much needed improvement over the old scheme. It looks great, and looks amazing. It has great color and designs schemes, and has earned an A+.

Brian Scott #44 Medallion Bank Ford Fusion-One of the worst schemes from last year is now one of the best schemes this year. I like the shade of yellow they used, and the checkered flag pattern looks really good too. I give it an A+

AJ Allmendinger #47 Bush’s Grilling Beans Chevy SS-Same scheme as last year, same A grade.

Ty Dillon #95 BVT/Blake’s Snow Shack Chevy SS-The white stripes don’t look good, and the Blake’s logo contrasts with the design, and looks forced on. Still, it’s not that bad of a scheme, so I’ll give it a B+.

Cole Whitt #98 Carolina Skiff/Fun Chaser Chevy SS-No complaints about this one! Great color and design schemes will always earn an A+.

Jamie McMurray #1 Bass Pro Shops/National Wild Turkey Federation Chevy SS-Camo is an automatic one letter grade deduction, but the scheme is so bad, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. I don’t like the use of the turkey, I think it looks awful, and the color scheme is not great. F

Jamie McMurray #1 Cessna/McDonald’s Patriotic Chevy SS-The switching from white to red is an improvement, and actually takes this scheme from a B+ to an A-.

Brad Keselowski #2 Miller Lite Patriotic Ford Fusion-The pointless addition of “patriotic” element take one of the best schemes, and an A+ scheme down to a C-.

Brad Keselowski #2 Miller Lite 1972 Throwback Ford Fusion-Great throwback, love the ambitiousness of the design, and the color scheme is great. A+

Austin Dillon #3 Cheerios/Lee’s East Rowan Cafe Chevy SS-Same as Cheerios, but with Lee’s East Rowan Cafe on quarter panels, same A+ grade.

Trevor Bayne #6 Advocare Patriotic Ford Fusion-When your regular colors are red, white, and blue, YOU DON’T NEED A SPECIAL PATRIOTIC SCHEME THAT ADDS EXTRA COLORS! As if that wasn’t bad enough, the design scheme looks terrible. F

Danica Patrick #10 Nature’s Bakery Patriotic Chevy SS-Camo is not a good look on race cars, and normally, I would deduct one letter grade from the grade, but this scheme is so bad, I’m just going to give it an F.

Greg Biffle #16 Cheez-Its Patriotic Ford Fusion-The patriotic elements at the bottom of the car just look forced, and the car as a whole is taken from an A+ down to a B+

Kyle Busch #18 M&M’s Patriotic Toyota Camry-A good scheme that works well as a patriotic scheme. The design works well with red, white, and blue, and works well. A+

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. #17 Fastenal Patriotic Ford Fusion-The trimming of the stripes on the sides look good, and the addition of the red around the star look really good. Fastenal took a B+ scheme up to an A-.

Joey Logano #22 Shell/Pennzoil Mosiac Ford Fusion-The Shell/Pennzoil scheme is bad to begin with, but the mosaic motif just makes it look worse. F

Chase Elliott #24 NAPA Patriotic Chevy SS-If you do a patriotic scheme, could you commit to it, and not just take your normal scheme, and add some patriotic elements to it? It just looks lazy. It’s like writing a term paper the night before it’s due. D+

Chase Elliott #24 NAPA Throwback Chevy SS-While I like the idea of the vintage NAPA logo, could you commit to it, and add them to the quarter panel? It’s not a bad scheme, but not adding it to the quarter panel is not a great move. I’ll give it a B- since the color and design schemes do work here.

Ryan Newman #31 Whelen Chevy SS-Not a bad looking scheme at all, the red works well, the white sides work well, and the car as a whole is a good looking car. A+

Chris Buescher #34 CSX Play It Safe Hire Our Veterans Ford Fusion-Two words: Purple Camo. F

Landon Cassill #38 MDS Patriotic Ford Fusion-It’s a patriotic scheme that works well with the sponsor, and the design scheme for Front Row. A+

Landon Cassill #38 MDS Patriotic Ford Fusion-It’s a patriotic scheme that works well with the sponsor, and the design scheme for Front Row. A+

Kyle Larson #42 Target Scott Dixon Chevy SS-Scott Dixon’s throwback scheme is really good on his IndyCar, and that good look transfers to the Target Chevy of Kyle Larson. I can’t say anything bad about this scheme. A+

Martin Truex Jr. #78 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevy SS-New scheme for 2016, same as Bass Pro Shops, but more the camo is more prominent. F

Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 Nationwide Patriotic Chevy SS-When I said I wanted a total commitment to a patriotic scheme, this is EXACTLY what I meant! This is a great looking scheme, and the waving flag motif works very well. I can’t say anything bad about this scheme. A+

Matt DiBenedetto #83 Hope For Warriors Toyota Camry-Let’s just put as many patriotic designs we can on the side of a car and see how it looks…well it looks awful!  F

Michael McDowel #95 Thrivent Financial Patriotic Chevy SS-See Dale Earnhardt Jr. above. A+

The Driver Suit Blog-Paint Scheme Grades-February 13, 2016

By David G. Firestone

Jamie McMurray #1 Sherwin Williams Chevy SS-The scheme from last year has had some slight changes, but it’s still a solid B+ scheme. I do like the 150th anniversary logo on the hood.

Jamie McMurray #1 McDonald’s Chevy SS-Much better looking scheme than last year, looks very good. Love the new design scheme. A+

Brad Keselowski #2 SKF Ford Fusion-A great look. The Penske template works quite well with this color scheme. No complaints at all. A+

Trevor Bayne #6 Advocare Ford Fusion-A new scheme that works very well. The color scheme is really good, and the subtle checkered flag motif works well. A+

Clint Bowyer #15 Visine Chevy SS-This is a case where the design scheme doesn’t work with the color scheme. It’s not a horrible look, but it’s not great. B+

Kyle Busch #18 M&M’s Throwback Toyota Camry-Great look, great color scheme, great design, A+

Joey Logano #22 AAA of Southern California Ford Fusion-Same scheme as last year, same D grade.

Joey Logano #22 Pennzoil Ford Fusion-What a difference a year makes. Pennzoil had a horrible scheme last year, and they redeem themselves with this great scheme. Pennzoil has a great shade of yellow, and the design scheme looks really good too. A+

Jeffery Earnhardt #32 Can-Am/Kappa Ford Fusion-We have a new leader in the
“ Worst Template” category. Go FAS always over-designs their cars, and they’ve gone above and beyond with their new template. The color scheme is horrible, and the deigns scheme is even worse. I wish I could go lower than an F, but I can’t.

Jeffery Earnhardt #32 Keen Parts/Corvette Parts Ford Fusion-See above. F

Reed Sorenson #40 CRC Brakleen Chevy SS-It’s amazing how changing the primary color from red to black can take an A scheme down to a D-.

Kurt Busch #41 Monster Energy/Haas Automation Chevy SS-Same scheme as Monster Energy, same A+ grade.

Michael Annett #46 Pilot/Flying J Chevy SSSame scheme as last year, same A+ grade.

AJ Allmendinger #47 Kroger/Scott Chevy SS-Taking away the stars from last year makes a great scheme even better. A+

AJ Allmendinger #47 Kroger/Stoffer’s/Lean Cuisine Chevy SS-See above. A+

Jimmie Johnson Lowe’s Red Vest Chevy SS-The amalgamation of Red Vest and Jimmie Johnson foundation does NOT look good. The shade of red is the only thing giving it a passing grade, though in this case, a D-.

Michael McDowell #95 K-Love Chevy SS– A+
